Does My eSIM Start Counting Usage Immediately After Activation?

Updated over 2 months ago

Understanding When Your eSIM Starts Counting

Most Nesa Mobile eSIM plans can be pre-installed before you travel, so you don’t have to worry about setting things up after you land. However, your data usage and validity period do not start immediately upon installation.

When Does Your eSIM Start Counting?

  • Most eSIMs start counting from the first network connection in the destination country.

  • Some eSIMs start counting from the first installation—these plans are clearly labeled on the website before purchase.

This means you can install your eSIM ahead of time without losing any days of service before you need it.

What If Activation Fails?

Rare Cases: Activating Outside the Intended Country

In most cases, you can install and activate your eSIM before traveling without any issues.

However, in rare cases, if you try activating your eSIM in a country where it's not meant to be used, it may not connect to a network. For example:

  • If you're in the UK and activating a US eSIM, it may fail to connect.

  • Once you arrive in the US, your eSIM should automatically connect to a supported network.

If this happens, don’t worry. Just wait until you arrive in the destination country, and it should work automatically. You may need to restart your device or toggle the eSIM off and on.

Troubleshooting If Your eSIM Doesn't Activate in the Destination Country

If your eSIM still doesn’t activate after you arrive, try these steps:

1️⃣ Basic Troubleshooting

Make sure you're connected to stable Wi-Fi – A weak or unstable connection can cause activation failures.
Restart your device – A quick reboot can refresh the network connection.
Toggle the eSIM off and on – Go to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data and turn the eSIM off, then back on.
Enable Data Roaming – Some eSIMs require this setting to be turned on.
Make sure your device is unlocked – If your phone is locked to a carrier, it may not support third-party eSIMs.

2️⃣ Check Network & Connectivity Settings

📡 Manually select a network

  • Go to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Network Selection

  • Turn off Automatic and try selecting a network manually.

  • If no networks appear, move to an area with better signal.

📡 Switch between different network modes

  • Some eSIMs work better on 4G LTE instead of 5G. Try switching under Settings > Cellular > Voice & Data.

📡 Check APN settings (if required)

  • Some networks need APN (Access Point Name) settings to be entered manually.

  • If needed, check the setup guide for the correct APN values.

3️⃣ Contact Support (If Nothing Works)

If none of these steps fix the issue, reach out to Nesa Mobile Support and provide:

  • Your order number and eSIM plan details

  • A screenshot of your device’s network settings

  • Any error messages you see

We’ll help you get connected as soon as possible!

Final Notes

🔹 In most cases, your eSIM will activate smoothly, even if installed outside the intended country. If it doesn’t, just wait until you reach your destination, and it should work automatically.
🔹 If your eSIM doesn’t connect right away, a restart or quick toggle usually fixes it.
